wetandwindy2 Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 hi guy ,i started my 1997 2.0 dohc mk1 galaxy the other day and a loud high pitched whine came from the engine it lasts about a minute then you can hear it kind of winding down then its all quiet the car runs fine no probs whatsoeverwhen i checked where its coming from, as you stand in front of the car its coming from the right hand side of the engine is that where the waterpump is its the only thng i can think of but am not sure if anybody has any ideas thanks iain Quote
asp383 Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 Try spraying the pulleys etc with wd40 to see if it stops, sometimes it's nothing to worry about, a lot of engines have a squeal when 1st started, can often be something simple like a cold belt & friction/slipping between it & a pulley, as everything turns, the belt warms up & becomes softer & oils thin slightly, it grips better. As you say it stops after a while, I wouldn't be too concerned about it, although worth a look just to make sure nothing untoward is obvious. Quote

asp383 Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 my appologies, misread your op. changing the starter is easy enough, but from memory (last starter i changed was on my galaxy diesel about 4 years ago), the top /inner bolt may be a bit awkward & a longer extension may be required, petrol may be a slightly different bolt pattern though. just make sure to disconnect the battery before starting though. it is possible that the starter is at fault & running on once the key is released, but i've not heard of a starter running on for more than a few seconds. unless the ring gear is worn & or the return spring in the starter has failed, causing the ring gear to "hold" the gear in the starter & taking a while to release. other than the clutch/gearbox, there isn't anything else at that end of the engine, the water pump will be driven by the auxillary belt. is it manual or auto? have you checked the oil level in the gearbox? is it doing it every time you start the engine? have you tried starting it with your foot on the clutch? although normally, if it's the clutch release bearing, it will make more of a grinding soundall the time until you press the clutch in. it may also be worth checking the starter actuator wire, to ensure the power switches off when the key is released. if you take the starter off, you can "bench test" it on the floor ... use jump leads & then a short length of wire to touch from the + to the actuatror wire terminal (stand on it so it doeesn't jump about), once the starter is spinning up, remove the wire & it should stop fairly quickly Quote
wetandwindy2 Posted August 25, 2013 Author Report Posted August 25, 2013 ok thanks will all of the above cheers Quote
wetandwindy2 Posted August 25, 2013 Author Report Posted August 25, 2013 from my knowledge the clutch release bearing makes a more grumbly noise but this sound high pitch as if its going like the clappers then releases /disengages or something then winds down to being quiet ,so maybe something on the starter is sticking wil take out and give a good clean then bench test it Quote
wetandwindy2 Posted August 26, 2013 Author Report Posted August 26, 2013 ah ha after a little bit of rooting around i found the cause of the noise its the secondary air pump and after talking to the missus she finally decided to tell me oh that noise that only happens when its cold it runs for a minute after start up as it should except it loud so i wonder if that means its terminal if it broke would the car still work/go properly its going something to do with speeding /the heating of the gases for the cat had a look on thief bay and bloomin heck costs more than the car is worth 500 plus quid ,then found one for 100 but to be honest the car aint worth spending that much on such a part so might go second hand i wonder if its one part fits all or do i have to get one just to fit a 2.0 dohc any thoughts thanks Quote
asp383 Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 i know it may not sound as though it's worth buying new, but at least you'll know it's working & under warranty. i'm always cautious about what used parts i buy, you only have the seller's word "it's from a car i broke & is in full working condition", when it comes to sensors, brake & steering components, i always buy new this year, due to a starting/running problem, i've had to spent about £500 on my r plate 1.9tdi, but then again, it was given to me by my girlfriend's uncle when he downsized, other than that, it has only cost regular servicing costs, such as 2x front tyres, service kits, oil, cam belt kit & n/s/f wheel bearing for the previous mot, passed 1st time this month. it's probbly not worth much more than £500 as it is, but the way i look at it is, could i buy another/replace it with another 7 seater (needed due to my family & disabled mother-in-law), for the cost of the repair? if the answer is no, then it's worth repairing Quote
wetandwindy2 Posted August 26, 2013 Author Report Posted August 26, 2013 yes i see what you mean ,i donnt normally buy used parts for the same reason as you stated and definately would not buy brakes steering etc ,its just seems a lot so jury out that one but as it happens i found some more purely by chance stumbled upon something some one said on an other forum about a blown fuse and i had a blown fuse (30amp) i had enquired about this in an earlier thread but nobody seemed to have any ideas so anyway took out good and replaced with blown fuse and hey presto the air pump doesnt work so i left it like that as far as i know that blown fuse has been like that since god knows when and its passed its mots so will leave till next mot and if it fails then will worry about it then thanks all Quote
asp383 Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 good to hear it sounds like you've found the cause & hopefully cured it Quote
seatkid Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 And there was I thinking it was probably his wife sat next to him...... ;) Quote

BrianH Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) The sai pump as far as i can tell is used to warm up the cat when you start. Mine doesn't work properly either (it throws errors and makes a racket when starting) but hasn't actually caused a noticeable problem besides that. Might shorten the life of the cat though it being broken. And probably affects the emissions when its cold/first started. Edited August 27, 2013 by BrianH Quote
